Cardinals,

We are gearing up for TAKS here at Kent. Our first test will be on Wednesday, March 5. Third and Fifth grades will take the Reading TAKS and Fourth grade will take the Writing TAKS. Please make sure your child is ready for the test by getting a good night's rest. Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast and arrives at school on time. We encourage each child to do their best.

TAKS testing dates for the rest of the Spring are as follows:

  • Third grade will take their Math TAKS on April 29.
  • Fourth grade will take Math TAKS on April 29 and Reading on April 30.

We appreciate our volunteers. Your time and dedication to our school allow us to continue a tradition of excellence. If you have volunteered to help in any way at Kent please join us in the library for our Volunteer Reception on March 11 at 6:30. We will be introducing our newest PTA Life Members.

We will have our annual Jim Phillips Fun Run at 9 a.m. on March 14. We will be running in memory of our former music teacher.

Enjoy Spring Break the week of March 17-21. We also have a district holiday on March 24 due to a bad weather day that we did not need. I hope each of you have a safe and restful week. We'll see you back at school on March 25.

"Shine Your Smile Day" is coming!!!
Judy Blake and Lucy Bagley   Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs Monday, March 10 shine your smile

Kent Elementary is hosting Mobile Dentists/ Smile Programs Monday, March 10th.

We have invited Mobile Dentist to bring it's on site preventative dental care services to our school because we know how important good oral health is to our children's overall health.

"We know that tooth decay is most common chronic and infectious disease among children", explained Margo Woll, DDS and Marcy Borofsky, DDS, co- directors of Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs.

"We also know poor oral hygiene causes other problems in children, such as diminished growth in toddlers, poor nutrition due to difficulty eating and an increase in bacteria in the blood and respiratory systems."

A publication from the Centers for Disease Control states: "Children receiving dental sealants in school based programs have 60% fewer new decayed pit and fissure surfaces in back teeth for up to 2-5 years after single application. Among children, 90 % of decay is in the pit and fissures."

The Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs team will set up a mini dental office in our building and can provide dental examinations, cleanings, fluoride treatments x-rays and sealants (if necessary) for children who return completed forms.

Mobile Dentists/ Smile Programs can provide these services to families who need financial assistance and it has subsidized fees for those who choose to pay for the preventative care.

NO CHILD IS EVER TURNED AWAY FROM MOBILE DENTISTS/SMILE PROGRAMS BECAUSE OF FINANCIAL NEED.

Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs will complete dental exams and paper work required by state mandated programs, where required. Signing up your children to see the Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs' team is an easy and convenient way to get necessary preventative dental care.

If you want your child to see the dentist on "Shine Your Smile Day", just fill out the permission slip and return to your school nurse clinic .

You can learn more about Mobile Dentists/Smile Programs by going to its website: www.mobiledentists.com and watch the short video about preventative dental care programs. Or you can call 1-888-833-4441.

Eat, Sleep, Breathe!
Donna Cotter, School Counselor   TAKS TIPS 3children at desks
Dear Kent Families,

Before our first round of TAKS tests, I want to share some test taking tips with you.
  1. Plan ahead: Pack extra pencils and any supplies you may need ahead of time.
  2. Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep the night before the test. If your child stays up late, he or she will be tired and unable to concentrate.
  3. Help your child have a good breakfast and lunch the day of the test.
  4. Help your child remain calm because stress is contagious.
  5. Practice deep relaxing breathing with your child. Deep breathing helps you relax before the test and supplies your brain with oxygen.
  6. Help your child remain positive about his or her ability to do well on the TAKS test.
I love working with your children as their counselor at Kent Elementary. Please feel free to call me if I can be of assistance to you or your child.

Sincerely,
Donna Cotter, School Counselor
