From the Principal's Office...
Debbie Williams, Principal   walking bird

Thanks to everyone for participating in our Family Fun Night during Red Ribbon Week. We especially appreciate the countless hours that our volunteers worked throughout the week. Thanks to everyone who helped us with our silent auction, book fair, sock hop and all the other activities during this special time.

To date, we have made over $5000 at the Silent Auction. The money will be used for student enrichment and activities. We will have our annual Turkey Trot on November 14. Your support at the auction makes this and other fun activities possible.

We are so thankful for faithful Tuesday morning volunteers who prepare materials for our students and teachers. We appreciate all the laminating, cutting and stapling that you do for us. We could not do without the parents who work at home to help our teachers.

Our kindergarten, first grade and third grade classes have attended field trips. We appreciate all the volunteers who went with us as chaperones. We couldn't do it without you! Parents, we appreciate everything you do for the students at Kent! Our kindergarten, first grade and third grade classes have attended field trips. Reflections Awards & 3rd Grade Performance
PTA Meeting Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 pm sun&moon

There will be a PTA meeting Tuesday, November 13th featuring the Reflections Awards* and a special performance by our 3rd Graders.

Our 3rd Graders will go on a giant "Star Search" at our November PTA meeting. They will be searching for our sun, who is missing. Imagine the confusion when our planets cannot revolve around the sun, the center of our solar system. Proxima Centauri and Sirius will also be there to help the planets find their sun.

So, join us in the the fun as the 3rd Graders present the musical, "Star Search".

See you at the program!

*Please note all winners will be notified in writing prior to the awards ceremony

We would like to thank all of the wonderful Kent parents who donated delicious goodies for the teacher luncheon in September and also many thanks to all the helping hands we had in the kitchen on the day - we could never have coped without you. We had a picnic theme and served cold meats, salads and fried chicken to bid farewell to Summer.

Our next luncheon will be hosted on the 13 December and we will be sending out sign up sheets around the third week of November. If you are not on the hospitality email list and would like to help provide a dish or help on the day of the luncheon please contact either Heather Kline (pandhkline@verizon.net) or Bev Wilcocks (wbeverley@gmail.com).

Once again - we really appreciate all your help.

Happy holiday season. Heather Kline and Bev Wilcocks :)

Childhood Obesity is a growing problem!!
Kelly Rosenthal   Tips for a Healthier Generation 2006 turkey trot
In the past 30 years the number of overweight children and adolescents has nearly TRIPLED! It is now estimated that one out of five U.S. children are overweight. These statistics are alarming and every parent should be very concerned. Overweight children are at greater risk of developing medical conditions that affect a child's present and future health and have a direct impact on quality of life including:
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes
  • Sleep Apnea, Shortness of breath, Asthma
  • Bone and joint problems
  • Liver and gallbladder disease
  • Early puberty
  • Depression & Low self-esteem
  • Poor body image & Eating disorders

Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight or obese adults. If this epidemic called obesity continues, the current generation may become the first in American history to live shorter lives than their parents. Isn't that scary? Isn't that sad?

It doesn't have to be this way. Excess weight is usually caused by too many calories consumed and too few calories expended. Children can't change their eating and activity habits by themselves. They need help and support from their parents and other family members. By empowering your children to make better choices now, you can have a huge impact on their health and quality of life in the future.

To help determine if your child is overweight, please refer to www.cdc.gov/growthcharts. Even if your child is not overweight now, it is still important to teach them how to lead a healthy lifestyle that can last a lifetime. Making changes can be challenging, but once healthy habits become routine it is actually pretty easy and can be a lot of fun!

The first thing you should do is educate yourself so you in turn can educate your family. Listed below are some helpful tips you can start using right away as well as resources for more information. It is a good idea to discuss any concerns with your child's physician.

Talk with your children about good health and why it's important. Be positive! Being healthier is exciting and shouldn't feel like a punishment. Don't focus too much on weight but more on being healthy and fit. Children tend to think about the here and now. Explain to them how being healthier will improve their performance in sports, like making them run faster, throw the ball farther, or swing the bat harder.

Try these helpful tips:

  • Drink more water/milk and less soda
  • Mix 100% fruit juice with club soda
  • Limit the number of meals eaten out of the house
  • Keep junk food out of the house, buy it only occasionally
  • Have healthy snacks available at the house and on the road while tending to after school activities
  • Turn off the TV and sit down as a family for dinner
  • Don't allow TVs and computers in children's bedrooms
  • Limit time spent on the computer, watching TV, or playing video games and replace with other fun activities
  • If it's safe, encourage children to play outside; tag, hopscotch, jump rope, ride bike, basketball, play catch
  • Organize family activities, go for a walk or a bike ride together, play games at the park or in the yard
  • Include children in active chores, such as cleaning the house, washing the car, raking leaves or walking the dog
  • Get your children involved in the kitchen, show them how to prepare healthy foods and have them help you
  • Bring children to the grocery store and show them how to read food labels
  • Teach your children to eat a balanced diet and all things in moderation
  • Serve a variety of foods from every food group and give them a choice in what they eat
  • DO NOT use the "clean your plate" rule. Children should be allowed to choose how much to eat
  • Teach them to push their plate away when they are no longer hungry
  • DO NOT use food as a reward or punishment
  • Use a lot of praise to encourage your kids
  • BE A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL
