From the Principal's Office... |

Debbie Williams, Principal |
|
Thank you for a great start to the 07-08 school year. We enjoyed
seeing old and new faces at both Meet the Teacher and Back to School
Nights. We appreciate your support and participation in your child's
education. Our current enrollment is 542 students.
Parents have been guest starring on the morning announcements to share
about their jobs. The kids love it! We need more parents to join us.
We need representatives of all types of occupations. If you are
interested, please call Donna Cook to get more information.
Kent will be holding their Silent Auction on October 23 during our Red
Ribbon Week celebration. We appreciate donations for the auction.
Items such as sports memorabilia, gift cards to restaurants or stores,
and tickets to sporting events are just a few of the things that our
families love to bid on. Money raised supports programs for the
students like the Earth Dome, Water Day, Turkey Trot, Choir, Fun Run
and the Safety Patrol.
We are looking forward to a great semester. Thank you for the
support you give your children and Kent Elementary.

Kent Cardinals Care! |

Miles Kuperus (epa@knetpta.org) |

Going Green Begins at Home
My name is Miles Kuperus and I am the environmental awareness person
on the Kent PTA parent board of representatives. I'll admit to being
more than a little bit green. I like to walk, I have a garden and
compost bin in my backyard, I love to reuse and recycle and I don't
let my house get colder than 84F (in the summer that is). Most
importantly however, I try to teach my kids why it's important to
reduce their impact on the environment, and how some day it will be
their turn to teach their kids the very same lessons.
Rest assured that I realize this environmentally friendly stuff
isn't always that convenient. I do understand that it seems like the
actions of one person or one family are inconsequential, but if we
don't start somewhere, things will never progress forward. My youngest
is 4 years old and when you ask him to throw something out he always
asks, "Recycling or garbage?" I didn't have to teach him that, he saw
the rest of the family making those choices all the time and simply
picked it up. Recycling will never be difficult because he really
doesn't know any other way. The downside of this is that he may often
find himself wandering the streets clutching an empty pop can looking
for a recycling bin, unable to bring himself to toss it out as
garbage. If only public recycling bins were as common as Starbucks!
I don't think any of our kids are jaded enough yet to feel that they
can't make a difference, so by leading by example at home and at Kent,
there's no reason to think that environmentally responsible choices
won't come as naturally as closing the refrigerator door after you're
done.
I would also like to encourage everyone to participate in the
International Walk to School Day on October 3rd. Nationally only about
10% of kids walk to school, while the majority are either driven by
parents or bussed. In the Tuesday folder handout, there are some
excellent reasons for walking to school. Personally, I loved walking
to and from school, it was a great time to hang out with friends and
was also one of those rare times that you got a little taste of
independence.
I am hoping that over this school year we can all work together to
lower Kent's environmental footprint. I would love to hear from anyone
with any ideas on things we could be doing. Please feel free to email
me at: epa@kentpta.org

Your Child's Cherished Artwork
Our school, in conjunction with Art to Remember, is offering a program
that reproduces your child's personal artwork onto a variety of
colorful products including: magnets, key chains, quilt blocks,
beverage insulators, matted prints, wall calendars, bookmarks, note
cards, coaster sets, ceramic mugs, sports towels, mouse pads, heart
and snowflake ceramic ornaments, journals, sketchbooks, placemats, CD
cases, stainless steel travel mugs, teddy bears with T-shirts, tote
bags, ceramic tiles, aprons, T-shirts and sweatshirts, This year we
also have two new products: a recipe organizer booklet and a memory
scrapbook.
Your child will create artwork following the art class curriculum.
A large refrigerator magnet will be made from your child's artwork
that you may purchase or return. You will have the opportunity to
purchase a variety of other products with your child's artwork. You
are under no obligation to purchase. However, we believe you will be
excited by these unique personal keepsakes. They make great gifts for
family and friends.
The initial magnet and product flyer should be coming home in
mid-October. Finished products should arrive at Kent the end of
November.
We are happy to share this unique program so that you might have a
remembrance of your child's art.

Join children and adults around the world to celebrate the benefits of
walking. International Walk to School day is an annual event that
promotes walking for several reasons.

Frankford Wednesday, Ocotober 3 for Walk to School Day at 7:40.
Why Walk?

- Wareness of how walkable a community is and where improvements
can be made
- Concern for the environment
- Rdeucing traffic congestion, pollution, and speed near schools
- Taking back neighborhoods for people on foot
- Sharing time with community leaders, parents and children
Join the Walking School Bus!
Currently, a small group of parents ar in the process of having the
school zone re-installed and a cross walk guard placed on duty at
Frankford and Cambridgeshire. Soon, the city will assign a temporary
guard to conduct a study to see if it is needed on a permanent basis.

Are You Current On Drug Slang? |
|
|
from Youth Protection C-FB ISD PTA Council |
|
Parents - The Anti Drug
Getting educated on drug slang can save your child's life. Kids begin
getting exposed to drugs as young as 10 years old. Note the cheese
problem in Dallas elementary schools.
Researchers have found that parents knew about their child's marijuana
use only 26% of the time. Parents also need to be aware of gateway
drugs. Shifting from alcohol to marijuana to prescription drugs. Don't
assume high achieving kids are immune from the drug problem. Often
it's the kids that face tremendous pressure to achieve in academics or
sports that end up addicted, particularly to prescription drugs. They
start out with Xanex for anxiety and their drug use spirals out of
control.
Know the signs and get educated. www.theantidrug.com is a great place
to start.
Drug Slang
- Strawberry Quick-New form of Crystal Meth mixed This is new to
North Texas coming from California.
- K-Hole-Periods of Ketamine-induced confusion.
- Cotton-Slang for painkiller OxyContin, often found
- Rophies-Nickname for the date rape drug Rohypnol
- Fry Sticks-Marijuana dipped in formaldehyde and
- Bump-Inhaling a small amount of cocaine
- Sextasy-Combining Viagra with ecstasy
- Amped Out-Fatigue after using amphetamine
- Primo-Marijuana rolled with cocaine
- Juice-Slang for steroids or PCP
